The U.S. men's gymnastics team has been adamant that they have the skills to bring home the gold, and judging by their latest scores they're on the right track.
On Saturday (July 28), the talented group, which consists of Jonathan Horton, Danell Levya, John Orozco, Jake Dalton, and Sam Mikulak, competed in the first day of the Olympics' and dominated in the qualifying rounds.
After successfully making it through the first round without a single fall, the U.S. brought in a score of 275.3, which is an impressive three point lead ahead Russia, which landed in second place.
When the competition was complete, team captain Horton told the Associated Press, "We're going to do everything we can to make it finish like that, I was actually joking ... earlier, 'Can we just get the medals now?' But we've got one more day to go, and we're pumped about it."
Teammate Levya also gushed about the group's possibility of taking home a win, saying, "Now is when everyone is finally, completely realizing how much we believe in it and today was definite huge proof of that."
If history is holds a place in predictions, the U.S. men's team has a definite edge. The AP explained that "since 1997, when scoring began starting anew in the final, only three first-day winners have failed to finish atop the podium at either the Olympics or world championships."
